Opening Activities / Setting the Stage 

Pre-assign: Read on China's High Speed Train(reference 1) and work on assignments: 1.Working on your own, jot down the new vocabulary words in your notebook and look up their meanings in the dictionary. 2.Read the text and write down the main ideas in your notebook.
Comprehension Quiz on the text (reference 2)
Watch video clips on a few transportation methods--typical in China--and compare and contrast with those available in students' home country

Main Activities - Comprehensible Input 

1. Vocabulary: recycle and practice
Present the vocabulary with pictures and gestures
2. Bingo Game (reference 3)
3. Interpersonal activity (reference 4): Present how to describe itinerary by using sequence phrases and let students work in group of two and talk about how to get from one place to another
4. Present the structures on how to express opinion and provide comparison

Main Activities - Guided Practice 

Presentational activity:
In groups of two, present in Chinese the following topics based on the reading of the text.
Topic a. The young man’s travel itinerary from Luo Yang to Xi’An (make sure to include time, train number, etc.)
Topic b. The young man’s opinion on the price and speed of the train
Topic c. The young man’s opinion on the train when he compares it with normal train and airplane

Presentational and Interpersonal activity: In groups of two, write an interview between this young man and a reporter from the newspaper. Make sure that the interview format is used (conversation) and it covers most of the essential elements of the text (the young man’s itinerary, the price of the ticket, his opinion on the train—speed, cleanliness, comfort level, service, etc. and the possibility of future choice of transportation)

Main Activities - Independent Practice 

Students work on their own and write about the differences between the transportation methods in their home country and China by using the structures learned earlier

Closure 

Students talk about how they will travel if they visit China in the future
