Opening Activities / Setting the Stage 

Activity 1: Asynchronous
A fourth grade student knows China a 12 Zodiac animals, but want to know what animals are in it, and want to know what is her own zodiac animal.

Activity 2: Synchronous
Angela was born on January 19, 2006. Her Chinese friend Nana told her that she was born in the year of rooster. Angela is very confused since 2006 is the year of dog.

Main Activities - Comprehensible Input 

Activity 1:Asynchronous:
Students will learn the new vocabulary from www.langlangchinese.com created by the teacher. They will listen, record and play games.

Activity 2: Synchronous
Teacher will teach the vocabulary through a PowerPoint and students will practice at www.langlangchinese.com

Main Activities - Guided Practice 

Activity 1:Asynchronous:
A. Students will listen to a story and identify what animals are in the Chinese Zodiac, and why the cat is not in it, and then share their answers on VoiceThread.
B. Teacher will identify her family members' birth years and zodiac animal by using a sentence frame.

Activity 2 Synchronous:
Teacher will show a calendar with the coordinated lunar dates, and use the sentence pattern to identify the dates. Teacher will do a Think Aloud for 3 times, and then invite the whole class to identify the dates together for 3 times, and last have the students work in groups to identify the dates through VoiceThread.

Main Activities - Independent Practice 

Activity 1:Asynchronous:
A. Students will learn the vocabulary and play games.
B. Students will listen to the story and identify the zodiac animals and answer a few questions.
C. Students will write what their favorite zodiac animal is and why. (Be sure to check the rubric)

Activity 2 Synchronous:
Students will role play as Angela and Nana to discuss what zodiac year was Angela born in and why.

Closure 

Activity 1:Asynchronous:
Students will tell their classmates their birth year and zodiac animal on VoiceThread (Be sure to check the rubric)

Activity 2: Synchronous
Students will write Angela a note to explain what is her zodiac animal and why on padlet. The note need to include the writer's name, the year were born both in the western and Chinese lunar calendar, and then explain what Angela's zodiac animal is.
